Shoalwater Bay, on the southwestern coast of Washington, is the setting for this view of canoes drawn up along the shore. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1913 while documenting Native life across the Pacific Northwest, and it later appeared in volume 9 of his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. It shows the watercraft that Salish people relied on for travel, fishing and gathering in the bay's sheltered waters. Curtis often arranged his subjects, so the scene reflects his particular vision as much as everyday practice.
