In November 1923, Calvin Coolidge, who had taken office as president only a few months earlier after Warren Harding's death, traveled to Alexandria, Virginia, to lay the cornerstone of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial on Shooters Hill. The monument was conceived by Freemasons as a tribute to Washington, a fellow Mason who had been involved in laying cornerstones of public buildings in the region. The ceremony drew Masonic officials and dignitaries, and the event shows how the presidency and fraternal organizations were tied together in the civic life of the period. Pictures like this one capture the formal dress and ceremony typical of public occasions in the 1920s.
