Calvin and Grace Coolidge are the subjects here, shown in a moment of departure from Washington for the summer at Swampscott, on the Massachusetts coast north of Boston. In 1925, the year after Coolidge took office as president, the family's annual move to the seaside was a well-known ritual, and the Coolidges used the stays to rest away from the capital's heat. The title's note of cheer fits a photograph that captures the couple's ease as they set out, a relaxed image that reflects how the press and the White House wanted the president's private life to appear.
