The engraving depicts the deaths of three Spaniards and the torments suffered by Juan Ortiz, a subject that sets it apart from the other scenes in this series. Ortiz had been captured by Native people on the Florida coast after the failed Narváez expedition of 1528, and he was still alive when Hernando de Soto's men reached him in 1539. His knowledge of local languages made him valuable as an interpreter during the expedition's march inland. The plate faces page 46 of Pierre van der Aa's 1731 French edition of Garcilaso de la Vega's account of De Soto's journey, a book that shaped European ideas about the Florida interior for generations.
