An anatomy lesson halted by protesters is the scene that sets this engraving apart from other images of medical education. It ran in the October 1882 issue of *Harper's* magazine, at a time when dissection still carried a heavy public stigma in New York, where it had once been part of the punishment for executed murderers and where medical schools depended on donated or unclaimed bodies. W.A. Rogers was a well-known illustrator for *Harper's*, and his topical drawings of the 1880s often commented on current controversies. This one reflects the growing tension between medical training and public objections to it.
