This engraving shows Hernando de Soto's army crossing a river the text calls the Cosaciqui, one of the many waterways the expedition had to cross while pushing through the interior of the southeastern North America in 1539 to 1543. It illustrates the 1731 French edition of *Histoire de la conquête de la Floride*, a work first written in Spanish by the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, the son of a Spanish captain and an Inca noblewoman. Garcilaso based his 1605 account on the recollections of soldiers who survived the journey. The plate, placed opposite page 261 of the first volume, reflects how 18th-century European readers pictured these expeditions: as orderly military columns moving through unfamiliar land.
