This engraving shows Atahualpa, whose Latin caption calls him the last king of the Peruvians. It is not a firsthand portrait. It was copied from an engraving in Arnoldus Montanus's Dutch work on the New World (1671), and it appeared as an illustration on page 658 of W.W. Robertson's 1902 history of the discovery and conquest of the Americas. Atahualpa was the Inca ruler whom Francisco Pizarro seized at Cajamarca in 1532, and the Spanish executed him the following year after he had been held for a ransom of gold.
