A sculpted head, not a living man, is the subject here: a bust of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the minister who managed French royal finances under Louis XIV. The title carries a question mark because the attribution to Antoine Coysevox is not settled. Colbert died in 1683, and his portrait came to stand for the state power he helped build, including the royal manufactories and academies he founded or reorganized. A photograph of the carving, made between 1900 and 1950, lets researchers study its form without traveling to France.
