Margaret Mather, an American stage actress who lived from 1859 to 1898, sits for this numbered card portrait dated July 28, 1883. Photographers of the period issued such mounted cards in series, and actors and actresses sold them to a public eager to collect the faces of stars. The copyright notation on the record shows the studio registered the image with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that protected the photograph from unauthorized copying. The card offers a glimpse of how theatrical celebrity was built in the 1880s, when a portrait could travel as far as a touring company.
