A bold eagle spreading its wings above open water gives this engraving its character, setting it apart from the many landscape and figure vignettes of its day. Before the Civil War, banknotes were decorated with engraved vignettes like this one, and the state-chartered banks that issued them each chose their own designs. Such images projected confidence and national pride, and their fine line work made counterfeiting harder. The print is dated roughly from 1850 to 1869, a period when the eagle was a favorite emblem of American identity.
