An eagle lifts a veil from a cameo portrait of Empress Carlota and Emperor Maximilian in this carte de visite, a staged allegory rather than a straightforward likeness. The eagle recalls the national emblem of Mexico, and the image casts the Habsburg couple as the country's new rulers. Maximilian, an Austrian archduke, accepted the Mexican crown in 1864 with support from Napoleon III's French intervention, and Carlota, a Belgian princess, served as his empress. The print comes from a Mexico-linked studio, A. Peraire, and it was collected in an album of portraits from Maximilian's reign, which ended with his execution in 1867.
