Unlike the other Watt portraits on this board, this one comes from a book: an engraved plate inserted between pages 118 and 122 of George Williamson's *Memorials of the Lineage, Early Life, Education, and Development of the Genius of James Watt*, published in 1856. The likeness is taken from a painting by Partridge and engraved by the firm of Schenck & McFarlane, probably in Edinburgh. Watt (1736-1819), the Scottish engineer whose improvements to the steam engine helped drive the Industrial Revolution, is remembered in the unit of power, the watt, that bears his name. Mid-century Britain was rediscovering its engineering pioneers, and books like Williamson's helped fix Watt's image for later readers.
