The assault on Fort Fisher, the sprawling earthwork guarding the mouth of the Cape Fear River, was one of the largest joint operations of the Civil War. By early 1865, Wilmington was the last major Confederate port where blockade runners could still bring in supplies, so the fort's fall was a serious blow to the South. This print shows the combined naval bombardment and land attack of January 15, 1865, when Union sailors and soldiers stormed the works and took the fort that night. Currier & Ives issued many battle scenes like this for a public eager for war news, and the hand coloring adds vivid detail to the smoke, gunfire, and fighting.
