Temperance was a popular theme for American printmakers in the 1840s, when the movement against liquor drew large numbers of families into its cause. *The Fruits of Temperance*, published in New York by J.B. Allen around 1848, is a hand-colored lithograph, a medium that let publishers produce affordable images for a broad public. It is listed in the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which places it among the moral and genre prints the period's firms sold in quantity. Hand coloring was often done by workers in shared studios, so surviving copies can differ in tone.
