Frightened brood" takes its name from a family of young birds caught in a moment of alarm, a small domestic drama of the kind Currier & Ives liked to turn into color prints. The firm, based in New York, produced these lithographs in large numbers from the 1840s into the early 1900s, and many were colored by hand in workshops, so each impression varies slightly in tone. Its sentimental and rural scenes of farm life and animals were sold to a broad middle-class public who hung them in parlors and kitchens. The catalog number in the record places it among the firm's documented works, which helps researchers trace its date and print run.
