Daniel O'Connell, the Irish lawyer and campaigner who won Catholic Emancipation in 1829, is the figure this print commemorates. He died at Genoa in May 1847 while traveling toward Rome, and his body was returned to Ireland for burial at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin that August. Published in New York within months of his death, the lithograph by Nathaniel Currier reflects how closely American readers, especially the city's large Irish immigrant community, followed events across the Atlantic.
