Unlike most views of the palace, this print centers on the crowd itself, as its title, "The People in the Tuileries," makes clear. The date it names, February 24, 1848, is when Parisians swarmed the royal Tuileries, and King Louis-Philippe abdicated and fled to England, ending his reign. N. Currier published this hand-colored lithograph in New York that same year, when American readers followed the European revolutions of 1848 closely. Its bilingual title, in English and French, reflects that interest in news from abroad.
