Union Gen. John Sedgwick, commander of the Sixth Corps, was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter on May 9, 1864, during the fighting at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. This pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper records the place where he fell, and it also shows the earthworks and artillery of Battery B, 3rd New York Heavy Artillery. Sedgwick was one of the most respected corps commanders in the Army of the Potomac and the highest-ranking Union officer killed in the war, so the sketch preserves a site tied to a significant loss.
