Anthony Ashley-Cooper, seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, is the sitter here, a man best remembered for his decades of campaigning for factory children, miners, and the urban poor. The print turns a photograph by Mayall into a stipple engraving by D.J. Pound, a method that builds tone from many small dots and was widely used for portraits in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Photographic likenesses were often reproduced this way for books and periodicals, so the engraving shows how a camera portrait was translated into a printed image for a broad public.
