This print shows the burial of William Latané, a young Confederate officer killed in May 1862 during a cavalry skirmish in Hanover County, Virginia. The scene follows a painting by W.D. Washington, and A.G. Campbell's engraving reached viewers in 1868, a few years after the war ended. Its quiet, domestic setting, with mourners gathered around the grave, reflects the sentimental imagery that circulated in the postwar South, when stories of fallen Confederate soldiers were often retold as tributes to devotion and loss. Historians today read such pictures as part of the broader effort to shape memory of the war.
