Rather than a single scene, this item is the cover of a booklet collecting political cartoons from The Washington Star's coverage of the 1948 presidential race, drawn by Berryman, the paper's longtime cartoonist. The subject headings name the field as it stood that year: Harry S. Truman, the incumbent Democrat; Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican nominee; Harold Stassen, who had sought the Republican nomination; and Henry A. Wallace, who ran on the Progressive ticket. Cover art of this kind was a common way for newspapers to repackage their editorial cartoons, and the campaign's upset ending, with Truman winning despite early predictions favoring Dewey, gives such a collection lasting interest.
