Few engagements of the American Revolution are as tied to a single Pennsylvania landscape as the fighting along Brandywine Creek on September 11, 1777. Frederick Coffay Yohn's drawing, reproduced as a halftone in *Scribner's Magazine* in June 1898, presents the battle as an illustrator imagined it a century after the fact. British forces under General William Howe crossed the creek on a flanking march and turned Washington's position, a defeat that opened the road to Philadelphia. The plate appeared when magazines were increasingly using photomechanical halftones to print scenes like this one.
