Published in color by the Chicago firm Kurtz & Allison and copyrighted in 1889, this chromolithograph revisits the clash near Prophetstown in Indiana Territory on November 7, 1811, when William Henry Harrison's troops fought warriors gathered there. The caption credits Tecumseh with the attack, but Tecumseh was away recruiting allies, and the fighting was led by his brother Tenskwatawa, known as the Prophet. Popular prints of this era often cast the battle as a clear American victory, a story that helped make Harrison a national figure and later a presidential candidate. The image is worth studying for how it shapes that memory more than for the contested facts of the day.
