This print commemorates the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, fought on October 19, 1864, when a dawn Confederate attack under Jubal Early routed much of the Union army before Philip Sheridan rallied his troops and turned the day. The record dates it to about 1890, roughly a quarter century after the battle, when Chicago lithographers such as Kurz & Allison produced many colored prints of Civil War episodes for a public that still wanted those stories. The catalog data is based on an unverified shelflist card, so the exact date and the firm's role should be checked against other sources.
