The tablet in this view is the Lynch memorial in Galway, set into a stone wall and recording a local story that has long attracted visitors. According to tradition, James Lynch FitzStephen, a mayor of Galway, sentenced his own son to death in the late 15th century for the killing of a Spanish visitor, a legend the city has kept alive in stone for centuries. This card is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Its publisher, C.H. Graves of Philadelphia, sold many such views of European sites to American households around 1904.
