This 1935 drawing by Miguel Covarrubias pairs Dorothy Dix, the pen name of the newspaper advice columnist Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer, with Peggy Hopkins Joyce, a showgirl and socialite known for her several marriages. The two were an odd match, since Dix built a national readership by counseling women on love and marriage, while Joyce's public life was watched for its romantic and financial entanglements. Covarrubias, a Mexican-born caricaturist, produced such imagined exchanges for *Vanity Fair* in the 1930s, using exaggerated features and sharp wit to comment on celebrities of the day.
