A color woodcut poster from the 1890s casts Li Hung Chang, the Chinese statesman who served the Qing court, as an avid reader of the *Sunday Journal*. Li drew intense attention in the United States during his 1896 visit, when American newspapers covered his every move, so a newspaper promotion built around his name would have been a timely hook. The poster belongs to a wider late-nineteenth-century vogue for bold, eye-catching advertising, in which publishers used recognizable public figures to sell papers on city streets and in shop windows.
