Zeichnet 7. Kriegsanleihe" is German for "Subscribe to the Seventh War Loan," and this 1917 Vienna poster is a direct appeal to buy Austro-Hungarian government bonds during the First World War. It was designed by Adolf Karpellus (1869-1919) and printed in Vienna by J. Weiner. Wartime loan drives like this one relied on large color posters on city streets to reach ordinary citizens and persuade them to lend money to the state in exchange for interest. Its survival makes it a useful record of how the home front was mobilized for the war.
