This map shows Andersonville, the small town in southwest Georgia that became known for Camp Sumter, the Confederate prison that opened in February 1864. Crowded far beyond its planned capacity, the stockade held tens of thousands of Union soldiers, and roughly 13,000 of them died there from disease, exposure, and poor food and water before the camp closed in 1865. The record gives no date or mapmaker, though it names J.W. Cooper on the shelflist card, so the map's origin is best approached with that uncertainty in mind.
