Few pictures on this board name a route as directly as this one. Its title, "The New Trans-Atlantic Hebrew Line," offers passage across the Atlantic "for the exclusive use of 'the persecuted,'" and Frederick Opper drew it as a wood engraving for *Puck*, the illustrated satirical weekly, where it appeared in the January 19, 1881, issue on page 339. In the early 1880s, many Jews were leaving Russia and Eastern Europe for the United States, and the cartoon turns that movement into a pointed joke about who was being carried and how the passage was marketed. The record comes from an older caption card, so some of its details have not been fully verified.
