Sarah Bernhardt's 1896 American tour, booked by the management firm Abbey, Schoeffel & Grau, is the subject of this poster, and the title credits its design to Alphonse Mucha. The Czech-born artist had made Bernhardt's Paris posters famous earlier in the decade, and this American version was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company in Cincinnati, a firm known for large color runs for theatrical clients. Bernhardt, then in her early fifties, was among the most celebrated actresses in the world, and her American visits drew large audiences and heavy press attention. Mucha's flat color and decorative borders reached American streets largely through posters like this one.
