Most pictures on this board show horses in motion, but this 1880 Currier & Ives lithograph honors one animal in particular: American Eclipse, a chestnut Thoroughbred stallion whose name appears in the title as "the celebrated racehorse and sire of racers." He was famous in the 1820s for his match races on Long Island, and his later success as a stud, which produced many winning runners, made him one of the most influential sires of his era. The print was issued more than 30 years after his death in 1847, so it reflects how Americans remembered a racing hero of the early 19th century.
