The name points to the hundred-leaved rose, an old garden variety (*Rosa centifolia*) whose densely layered petals gave it the common name and made it a favorite of nineteenth-century gardeners. New York publisher Currier & Ives issued this lithograph around 1870, and the firm produced many floral subjects like it alongside its better-known scenes of rural life and sport. Its prints were inexpensive and widely sold, so they reached ordinary households as parlor and kitchen decorations. The catalog number 3230 places it among the firm's documented output of the period.
