Titled "Height of fashion," this lithograph shows African American children at play with a dog, a scene the record dates to the 1850s. Mrs. L.M. Spencer painted the original, and LaFosse made the lithograph, which W. Schaus published in New York around 1854 with printing credited to a Paris firm. Genre scenes like this were popular in the period, and many depicted Black figures in comic or stereotyped roles, so the title and the children's depiction are worth reading closely. The print also shows how lithography carried American subjects across the Atlantic in the mid-nineteenth century.
