A blind man carries a paralyzed companion on his back in this albumen print, titled "Arabes syriens. Aveugle portant un paralytique" and credited to the photographer Dumas, with the catalog note identifying the scene as Syrian Arabs. The pairing of the two men is the point of the picture: one supplies the eyes, the other the legs, a partnership that let each travel and beg where neither could manage alone. Photographs of such figures were popular in the 1880s, when studio and traveling photographers sold images of regional "types" to European and American buyers, so the staging and the subjects' poses reflect that market as much as daily life in Syria.
