The tipple and loading booms of the Empire Coal & Coke Company at Landgraff, McDowell County, West Virginia, are the focus here. A tipple was the tall structure where mined coal was screened and dropped into railroad cars on a siding, so the picture captures the moment coal left the mine for market. Quartermaster Corps photographers recorded such sites in 1918, when the wartime economy depended heavily on coal for railroads, ships and factories. Worth noticing are the freight cars on the tracks and the booms that moved coal into them.
