The stocks and pillory stand outside the restored public gaol in Williamsburg, Virginia, which served as the colonial capital until 1780. In the 1920s and 1930s the town was being rebuilt to its eighteenth-century appearance, a project funded largely by John D. Rockefeller Jr. This photograph from the Wittemann Collection, taken around 1937, shows how the reconstructed town looked to visitors during that work. Devices like these were meant to shame offenders in public as well as restrain them, and the open setting makes that purpose easy to picture.
