From above, this view of Arlington National Cemetery puts the Memorial Amphitheater in the middle of the grave rows, which makes the site's ceremonial center easy to see. The amphitheater was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1920 and built of white Vermont marble. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added to it in 1921. The grounds were once part of the Custis-Lee estate across the Potomac from Washington, and they became a national burial ground during the Civil War. The orderly pattern of headstones in an aerial photograph from this period shows how deliberately the cemetery was laid out.
