Few pictures on a legendary island are as specific as this one: an engraved map of the imagined empire of Atlantis, made in 1882 as an illustration for Ignatius Donnelly's book "Atlantis: The Antediluvian World." Donnelly, a former Minnesota congressman, argued that the lost island was a real place in the Atlantic that had been destroyed and that its culture seeded the ancient civilizations of Egypt and the Americas. The book was a popular success and helped fuel the late nineteenth-century fascination with Atlantis, so this map shows how a scholarly-sounding theory was given the look of geography.
