A performer dressed as a "roly poly" dancing doll, the weighted toy that rocks back upright when pushed, gives this picture its novelty. The costume turns a playful toy into a stage figure, a common gimmick in the vaudeville acts of the 1910s. Publicity photographs like this one were often registered for copyright, and this print carries a notice naming Orpheum of Chicago, a major vaudeville circuit of the period. Its survival in the Library's collection reflects that registration, which is one reason such theatrical images from the early 1900s are useful for studying stage costume and popular entertainment.
