In this wood engraving, Cupid bends over Psyche to wake her from the deathlike sleep that follows her curiosity about the box of Proserpina. The scene comes from Apuleius's second-century Latin novel *The Golden Ass*, where the story of the mortal Psyche and the god of love is embedded as a tale of trials, transgression and divine reconciliation. The record dates the print to between 1870 and 1896, a period when wood engraving was widely used to illustrate books and magazines with classical and allegorical subjects. Viewers will notice how the engraver used fine parallel lines to model the figures and draperies.
