Here the sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington is shown at work on an equestrian statue of Don Quixote, the knight from Miguel de Cervantes's novel, with the figure's final details still being shaped. Huntington, born in 1876, was among the best-known American sculptors of animals and horses, so a knight on horseback suited her strengths. Her husband, Archer Huntington, founded the Hispanic Society of America, which tied her work to Spanish culture and literature. The photograph was taken by the Joli studio around 1948, a period when portrait studios often documented artists at their studios for magazines and public relations.
