Lincoln Beachey's Curtiss aircraft, fitted with what the title identifies as an 80 Gnome engine, is the focus of this May 1913 photograph. Beachey was one of the best-known exhibition pilots of the early aviation era, and he flew for Glenn Curtiss's team, performing daring maneuvers that drew large crowds to air meets. The Gnome was a French rotary engine whose cylinders spun around a fixed crankshaft, and it powered many aircraft of the period. The picture offers a clear look at how these machines were built around such engines before the war years transformed aviation.
