Göring, the Reich's air minister, appears in this view of the state funeral for Oberst Werner Mölders, the Luftwaffe fighter pilot who had become one of the most successful aces of the early war. Mölders died in a air crash in late November 1941, and his funeral procession moved through Berlin to the Invalidenfriedhof, a cemetery long associated with Prussian military honor. Such staged ceremonies were used to present the dead pilot as a national hero, and the cortege draws attention to the regime's use of public mourning for propaganda.
