The German caption, "Die letzte Schlacht gewinnen wir" ("We will win the last battle"), sets the tone of this Presse-Hoffmann photograph, which the record links to a 1944 Nazi Party commemoration in Munich. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring are named as subjects. Munich's yearly remembrance of the failed 1923 Beer Hall Putsch was a central party ritual, so the event was likely staged as a display of unity as Germany's war position worsened. Presse-Hoffmann was a Munich-based press agency whose photographs appeared in regime publications, which is worth keeping in mind when reading how the scene was composed.
