The caption opens with the words "the investigation revealed that the explosive attack," which points to the bombing of the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich on November 8, 1939. A bomb hidden in a pillar went off during the annual commemoration of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, shortly after Adolf Hitler had left the hall early, and it killed eight people. The Nazi government's Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda issued this picture in an album that presented the damage as proof of the regime's resilience. The bomber, Georg Elser, was arrested near the Swiss border and was later executed.
