The caption names Karl Dönitz as Befehlshaber der U-Boote, commander of Germany's submarine arm, and the print comes from a numbered album, *Grossdeutschland im Weltgeschehen*, issued between 1939 and 1942 under the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Dönitz directed the U-boat campaign against Allied shipping in the Atlantic for much of the war, and by 1942 he was among the most publicized officers in the navy. Albums like this paired portraits and ceremonial scenes with captions meant to project confidence on the home front.
