This photograph, titled "Pakstand an der Küste" (roughly "anti-tank gun position on the coast"), records a German defensive emplacement on the French shore. "Pak" is short for *Panzerabwehrkanone*, the anti-tank gun that such positions were built to house. The print is catalogued in a 1944 photo list of the Atlantic Wall in Normandy and Brittany, the fortified coastline Germany began building in 1942 to guard against an Allied landing. Its reinforced concrete and placement on the shore show how the Atlantic Wall was designed around fixed artillery and bunkers. The Allied invasion of Normandy came in June 1944, so the picture captures these defenses shortly before they were tested.
