Here Martin Luther is shown delivered from death through his own prayer and the support of his friend Philipp Melanchthon, the episode named in the plate's German title. The print is plate twelve in Baron von Löwenstern's series of fifteen lithographs, *Luther und dessen Reformation*, published at Stuttgart in 1830, the tercentenary of the Augsburg Confession, when interest in the Reformation ran high. Lithography was still a fairly new reproductive method, and it let series like this reach a wider audience at a modest cost. The stress on prayer reflects how Protestant writers of the period liked to portray Luther as a man of deep faith.
