Uncle Sam offers the president a sendoff in this Rollin Kirby drawing, which ran in *The World* on April 21, 1916. The catalog record does not say which decision it praises, but spring 1916 was crowded with problems for Woodrow Wilson, including the U.S. Army's pursuit of Pancho Villa into Mexico after the Columbus raid and tensions with Germany over submarine attacks on shipping. Kirby, who drew for *The World* for many years, relied on the familiar figure of Uncle Sam to comment on the administration's choices. The cartoon is a good example of how political artists of the period cast the nation as a personified character who could approve of or scold its leaders.
